Northern Norway covers around a third of the country. The region is multicultural, being home not only to Norwegians, but also to the indigenous Sámi population, Norwegian Finns —known as Kvens Kvens—and the Russian population. Norwegian is the dominant language throughout most of the region. This trip lets you to discover the Far North and its myth. It takes you to the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, the island of Senja, the university town of Tromsø and the landscapes of the Finnmark region, including the famous North Cape.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Bodø
Arrival in Bodø depending on your itinerary. Bodø is located in the center of the Nordland region and is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including the Børvasstindene mountains to the south and the island of Landegode and the Lofoten Islands to the north. The town lies just north of the Arctic Circle, where the midnight sun is seen from early June to mid mid-July.
Accommodation in Bodø.
Day 2: Bodø - Lofoten Islands (about 170 km, including ferry ride)
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you sail by ferry from Bodø to Moskenes. This three-hour ferry journey takes you across the Vestfjorden to the charming Lofoten Islands, which stretch out like a wall of mountains into the sea. For centuries, catching and drying cod has been Lofoten's main industry. Two of the most famous images of these islands are the fishermen's cottages called rorbu and the stockfish hung out to dry on a wooden frame. Lofoten offers mountains, open seas and sheltered bays. From Moskenes, you continue to Henningsvær, where you'll spend the night.
Accommodation in the North of Lofoten.
Day 3: Lofoten - Vesterålen (about 240 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, departure from Mortsund to continue your journey to Harstad and the Vesterålen Islands. Learn more about these amazing islands and enjoy the magnificent natural surroundings. Heading north, you drive through Svolvær, known as the capital of Lofoten, and cross the “Lofast”, a new combination of tunnels and bridges linking the Lofoten Islands to the mainland and the Vesterålen Islands. In Vesterålen, mountains form a more rounded landscape pattern than in the Lofoten Islands.
Accommodation in Harstad.
Day 4: Harstad - Senja Island (about 230 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you head back to the mainland to reach the famous island of Senja via the Gisund Bridge. Sights include the Ånderdalen National Park, traditional fishing communities and the world's largest troll, the Senja Trollet.
Accommodation in Senja.
Day 5: Senja - Alta (about 450 km)
Breakfast at your hotel. Enjoy your trip to the Finnmark region, located in the northernmost part of continental Europe. Here, Norway leans eastwards. Finnmark has always been a crossroads of east and west, culturally, naturally and geographically. Here you can learn more about the culture and traditions of the Sámi people. We also recommend visiting the rock carvings dating from around 4200 to 500 BC in the Alta Museum. These carvings are on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Accommodation in Alta.
Day 6: Alta - North Cape (about 250 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you'll continue your journey northwards to Magerøya island, where you'll visit the northernmost point of continental Europe. The North Cape lies at 71° north latitude. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for sure! Rising majestically 308 meters above the Barents Sea, North Cape has always been an important orientation marker for northern sailors and a major landmark for people from all over the world. At North Cape, the midnight sun is generally visible from mid-May to the end of July.
Accommodation in Honningsvåg.
Day 7: Honningsvåg - Hammerfest - Tromsø (with Hurtigruten)
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Honningsvåg via the North Cape Tunnel, heading south-west towards Hammerfest. Hammerfest claims to be the most northerly town in the world, although this title is challenged by Honningsvåg and Longyearbyen in Svalbard—depending on the definition of “town”. On arrival, board the Hurtigruten, Norway's famous coastal vessel, for a one-day cruise departing at 12:45 pm. Hurtigruten travels along Norway's spectacular west and north coasts. The entire itinerary has been described as “the world's most beautiful sea journey”. You'll travel south by boat, passing some magnificent islands before arriving in Tromsø at 11:45pm.
Accommodation in Tromsø.
Day 8: Tromsø - Narvik (about 250 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Spare morning to discover downtown Tromsø, with its beautiful historic wooden houses coexisting with modern architecture. Tromsø was named after the island of Tromsøya on which it was built. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church built in 1965, is probably Tromsø's most famous landmark. Drive from Tromsø to the Troms region and enjoy the stunning scenery. Arrive in Narvik in the evening. The town features many memorials commemorating the Battle of Narvik in 1940, during the Second World War.
Accommodation in Narvik.
Day 9: Narvik - Bodø (about 320 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Continue along the coast with spectacular views of the many islands and islets emerging from the sea. As you reach Bodø, we recommend you head south out of town to cross the Salstraumen bridge and discover the world's strongest tidal current. Saltstraumen occurs when the tide attempts to fill the Skjerstad fjord. In trying to balance the two, the water increases its speed and turns into something similar to a very strong river. However, this “river” rotates in both directions. Huge whirlpools are formed, sometimes up to 10-15 metres in diameter. The current is at its strongest during the new and full moons.
Accommodation in Bodø.
Day 10: Departure from Bodø
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Bodø depending on your itinerary.
Note: To get from the airport to the city center or vice-versa, we recommend using low low-carbon means of transport such as airport buses/shuttles and private electric vehicles.
